Uppababy Cruz Stroller Review

Uppababy Cruz Review

If you want to explore the world with your child, an essential accessory you’ll need to invest in is a baby stroller. Unfortunately, there are so many pushchairs on the market that it can be difficult to find a quality model.

The easiest way to navigate the sea of strollers available is to focus on the features that are important to you. For instance, are you looking for one that has good suspension? One particular model that offers a good selection of features is the UPPAbaby Cruz stroller.

The pushchair has received numerous upgrades over the years, resulting in a model that is stylish, safe, and durable. This post is a comprehensive review of the UPPAbaby Cruz stroller.

UPPAbaby Stroller History

Uppababy Cruz History

Before we delve into the review, it helps to know how the UPPAbaby stroller brand started. This company was established back in 2006 by cofounders Bob and Lauren Monohan.

Their aim was to create a baby stroller that was sleek, chic, and most importantly user-friendly. At the time of launching their invention, they had three young children, but couldn’t find a worthy stroller to use. A majority of the models in the market had plastic frames and clunky designs.

So they set out to make a baby stroller that had a good selection of features. Their first model and their flagship product was the UPPAbaby Vista. This was a streamlined and well-equipped stroller with a frame made of aluminum alloy.

The stroller that went for $599 at the time, also had interchangeable seats, which snapped so easily into place like puzzle pieces. Other features that made this stroller stand out were a bassinet- perfect for newborns, an upright toddler seat for older kids, a strategically-positioned undercarriage for storage and large wheels that could tackle any terrain.

Thirteen years later, the UPPAbaby Vista is still a favorite for many parents. However, it has received several modifications and upgrades over the years. Also, the company introduced two other lines of strollers: the G umbrella models and Cruz.

The most popular in the G line is G-Lite, which is famous for its standing fold and mesh seat. The company’s latest addition to the G-Lit is the incorporation of an extendable UPF 50+ sunshade, a cup holder, partial zipper recline and a machine-washable fabric.

If you have twins, the double-stroller version of the G-Lite dubbed G-Link is the perfect solution. This one features independently-operated reclines, canopies and footrests. So if one toddler wants to take a nap and the other prefers to stay awake, you can set one to recline and the other to stay upright.

The latest invention from UPPAbaby is the Cruz, which is our point of focus. One of the things that has helped UPPAbaby thrive is their emphasis on quality build. Due to this, many parents have been drawn to one or more of their products.

Plus, their strollers are readily available. This has been made possible by building relationships with specialty stores like Giggle in New York and Greenwich in Connecticut. Currently, the UPPAbaby strollers are available in more than 40 international countries.

UPPAbaby Cruz Detailed Review

This is the smaller version of UPPAbaby’s flagship model- the Vista. As such, the Cruz is smaller and more compact, which makes it not only easy to navigate but also store. It has a regular seat that’s suitable for toddlers of up to 3 months and an infant seat for a newborn.

Design

If you’re looking for a baby stroller that looks stylish but is also affordable, the UPPAbaby Cruz Stroller is a fantastic option. Depending on the specific model that you purchase, the pushchair is available in an array of colors.

The latest unit that was released in 2018 has the fewest color combo options. Here’s what you can expect depending on the year the Cruz was made:

Cruz 2017

8 colors: Gregory, Austin, Loic, Taylor, Pascal, Sabrina, Taylor, Dennison, Jake

Cruz 2018

5 colors: Denny, Jake, Taylor/Sabrina and 3 melange versions: Jordan, Gregory, Emmet

Cruz 2019

UPPAbaby stopped designed 2 colors: the Denny and Taylor. All other colors are available

Overall, the design of the UPPAbaby Cruz stroller is streamlined and narrower. This makes it possible to navigate the stroller through very small aisles, doorways and sidewalks.

Seat

Uppababy Cruz Seat

When purchasing a baby stroller, one of the most important features you look for is the quality of the seat. After all, this is where your toddler will be spending most of their time. Well, you’ll be pleased to know that UPPAbaby has paid special attention to this component.

It’s spacious enough to accommodate an infant aged 3 months. Even better, it’s strong enough to hold your child until they reach 50 lbs. of weight. To provide maximum comfort to your baby, the seat is equipped with polyurethane foam padding. The seat also has a 5-point adjustable harness, giving you ample flexibility in how you position the baby.

Speaking of positioning, the toddler seat is fully reversible. This allows you to ride the stroller with your baby facing you. When I first started shopping for strollers, I didn’t notice the relevance of this reversible feature.

But now, I can’t purchase a stroller that doesn’t have one. It makes it incredibly easy to change the direction your baby is facing in case they want to explore their surroundings. Also, it means that you can change the direction they are facing swiftly in the event that the wind starts blowing rapidly.

Another feature worth pointing out about UPPAbaby Cruz stroller seat is that it’s equipped with a bumper bar. Some individuals use this bar for attaching toys to entertain their infants. In my opinion, the greatest benefit of this bar is to prevent your toddler from falling out in case the harness comes loose.

If you want a user-friendly stroller, look for a bumper bar that you can clip and unclip or slide out of position. This way, you don’t have to lift your baby over the bumper baby when you’re getting them in or out.

Frame

With previous models, the frame of the UPPAbaby Cruz has always been coated with powder. However, the company changed their approach and they now coat the frame with powder to provide a scratch-resistant surface. The frame is also very light- this is the aspect that helps to reduce the overall weight of the stroller.

Wheels

The latest UPPAbaby Cruz stroller is equipped with polyurethane tires that are said to reduce the risk of getting a flat. They’re also pretty light and durable.

With previous models- strollers made before 2017, the manufacturer used AirGo plastic wheels, which were filled with foam. However, the upgraded wheels provide a better performance.

Important to note though is that they’re smaller than those for UPPAbaby Vista. The front wheels on the Cruz are 6.4 inches while the back wheels measure 8.5 inches. Due to their smaller design, they’re not suited for off-road use or in any uneven terrains.

Uppababy Cruz Wheel

On the plus side, these tires roll very smoothly without generating any squeaking sound. They can be ridden on even terrain including areas with gravel or grass. Better yet, the stroller is designed in a way that allows you to lock the front wheels independently. This is to improve stability and allow for easier navigation through rough terrain.

While the UPPAbaby stroller doesn’t have any sort of suspension, the wheels have shock-absorption capability to provide as smooth a ride as possible. Another benefit of these wheels is that they don’t use pneumatic technology, meaning you don’t have to worry about the tires deflating mid-way.

Brakes

The braking system on Cruz stroller is the red-colored pedal, which is centrally-located on the rear axle. To engage the brakes, all you need to do is step on this pedal. Essentially, the brakes are easy to engage and disengage even when you’re wearing light footwear like sandals.

Canopy

Uppababy Cruz Canopy

If you live in a sunny or windy area, then a baby stroller equipped with a canopy is a must.

The canopy on Cruz pushchair is one of the best, boasting an extendable design and UPF rating of 50+. This means it provides maximum protection from harmful UV rays.

An interesting feature of the canopy is that it’s position can be adjusted to correspond to your baby’s height. If your child has grown a little older, simply slide the canopy a couple of inches up.

What’s more, you don’t have to worry about the canopy swaying from side to side. It locks securely into place once whether you’ve pulled it up or down.

Accessories to Use With UPPAbaby Cruz Stroller

Infant SnugSeat

If you’re buying the UPPAbaby Cruz stroller to use for a newborn, one of the accessories you should get is their Infant SnugSeat.

This seat is designed specifically for newborns, and it helps to cradle your baby while also providing ample neck and back support.

Another attachment that really comes in handy is the Parent Organizer. Made from a blend of polyester and neoprene, this is a pouch-like bag that attaches to the handlebar of the stroller.

It has several components that include a cup holder, a big zippered pocket and 2 smaller pockets. This is ideal for storing items like keys, and a cellphone.

Performance

UPPAbaby Cruz stroller is a joy to ride. It maneuvers so seamlessly whether you’re riding it on a sidewalk or grass. The base is very light, making it easy to carry on a flight of stairs or escalators.

Besides, folding this stroller is a cinch, and this makes for compact and convenient storage. Despite its smaller and narrower frame, the stroller is very sturdy. Thus, you’re assured that your baby is completely safe nestled inside this pushchair.

Assembly

When you open the box, you’ll find a toddler seat (attached to the canopy), a bumper bar, the frame and basket, wheels, rain shield and bug shield. These parts are very easy to assemble and it shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes. Here’s a detailed guide to assemble the Cruz stroller.

Who is the UPPAbaby Cruz Stroller Designed For?

Uppababy Cruz Reviews

UPPAbaby Cruz stroller is designed for a parent looking for an affordable pushchair with high-end features. From the variety of colors available to the selection of features incorporated in the Cruz, there’s no doubt that this is a luxury stroller.

This stroller is also suitable for parents who don’t have too much to spare for the pushchair’s storage. Since it can be folded into a compact unit, Cruz stroller occupies a very small space. In terms of age-group, UPPAbaby recommends using this stroller with babies aged 3 months and above. If you want to use it for a newborn, be sure to invest in the Infant SnugSeat.

UPPAbaby Cruz Stroller Safety

Getting a quality baby stroller like the UPPAbaby Cruz is the first step of using a stroller safely. In addition to that though, there are a couple of other things you should do to guarantee your baby’s safety.

Stay Close

One of the reasons why we chose this stroller is because its stable. The one-step foot braking mechanism ensures the stroller stays in place when you apply the brakes.

Still, it’s not advisable to leave your baby unattended when using the stroller. While you may have done everything in your power to keep the stroller stable, a third party may tamper with the pram and accidentally deactivate the brakes or interfere with another one of its features. If you have to run an errand, request another adult or baby sitter to look after your baby while you’re away.

Be Careful with Toys

There’s nothing wrong with hanging toys on the stroller bumper bar.

These toys provide an excellent way to entertain your baby and calm them down when they’re anxious or scared. However, it’s important to ensure that all the toys are securely fastened.

Also, the only thing you should hang on your baby’s stroller handle are toys.

Don’t add unnecessary items like shopping bags no matter how light they are. This is because they increase the risk of the stroller tipping over.

Uppababy Cruz Safety

Since the UPPAbaby Cruz comes equipped with a storage basket underneath, this is the only section you should use to store additional items. But even then, you should be careful not to exceed the recommended weight limit.

Buckle up

You should always the seat belt and harness included in the stroller to secure your baby. Even if they’re a little older, using these features is vital to keep your baby safe.

Use the Stroller Correctly

A common mistake that parents do is to use the bassinet or carrycot that comes with the stroller for indoor applications. Unless you’re purchasing a bassinet like the UPPAbaby bassinet that’s approved for sleeping, you should not use the carrycot in other ways that have not been recommended.

Another part of using a baby stroller correctly has to do with the braking mechanism. Anytime you stop, remember to engage the brakes to prevent it from rolling away.

Take Caution When Opening and Storing the Stroller

Whenever you’re unfolding or folding the baby stroller for storage, ensure your baby is not in close proximity. This is because their tiny hands and fingers can easily get stuck in the hinges. Also, confirm that the stroller is locked open before placing your baby in it.

Check for Recalls

Keep tabs on your baby stroller’s recalls. With the improved UPPAbaby stroller, you don’t have to worry about its safety or performance as it’s been tested and proven to be reliable.

But if you’re buying a second-hand UPPAbaby cruz stroller, you might want to confirm its year of manufacturing. Back in 2015, up to 71,000 baby strollers were recalled by UPPAbaby due to a choking hazard. This recall applied to 2015 Cruz and Vista strollers.

Alternatively, you can save money and purchase the most recent UPPAbaby cruz strollers that have not been recalled. This way, you’re 100% sure that it’s completely new and has no defects or health hazards. As a safety measure, you can register with the company so that it’s easier to track your specific stroller model.

Always Read the Manufacturer’s Instructions

Every stroller has distinct characteristics that make it unique. So even if you’ve used a baby stroller, you should read the respective manual each time you purchase a new one. If you don’t understand any content in the pages, inquire from the manufacturer or the retailer you purchased it from.

Reading the manual helps you familiarize yourself with the stroller’s features. In fact, you should test each one of these features before placing your baby in the stroller. Try folding and unfolding the stroller. Next, buckle and unbuckle the seat belt and harness. Also, raise and lower the backrest to determine if it works efficiently and test the brakes.

By reading the manual, you’re also able to understand the problems you’re likely to encounter when using the stroller and how to fix them.

Store the Stroller Indoors

Uppababy Cruz Store

Whenever possible, you should store the UPPAbaby cruz stroller indoors. This prevents it from getting exposed to weather elements that could damage it or worse, pose a risk for your young one.

For instance, most strollers have metallic components, which can get really hot when exposed to the sun.

Similarly, dark fabrics added on the stroller can get equally hot during summer. By keeping it indoors, you’re ensuring that the stroller is safe for future use. Besides, the UPPAbaby cruz stroller is foldable so it won’t take up too much space in your home.

In the event that you’re using a different brand of stroller that cannot be folded, you can store it in nifty places like under the stairs, the basement or closet. However, if you have to store it outdoors, choose an ideal shelter that shields it from external elements. This includes areas such as a garden shed, bike tent or a greenhouse.

Cleaning and Maintaining the UPPAbaby Cruz Stroller

If you’ve just returned home from a day out with your baby, there’s a high likelihood that it’s gotten dirty. Regardless of how careful you are, the UPPAbaby Cruz stroller will still get covered in dirt. When it comes to cleaning, there are two components you should focus on: the stroller’s frame and fabric.

How to Clean the Fabric

For daily upkeep, UPPAbaby recommends spot cleaning the stroller using a gentle fabric cleaner or detergent. But for tougher stains, you’ll need to remove the baby seat and canopy from the frame. Luckily, unlike other baby strollers on the market, the Cruz has a removable toddler seat and canopy fabric, and this makes for easy cleaning.

So the first step is to disassemble the fabric. The Cruz is a well thought-out stroller so all the parts detach and attach seamlessly.

The only tricky part is that you’ll need a screwdriver to remove the bolts holding the fabric down. Once disassembled, store the parts safely and get started on cleaning the fabric and seat. Learn how to remove the canopy and fabric here.

Another advantage of Cruz fabric and canopy is that they’re machine washable. The UPPAbaby toddler seat is made of polyester fabric, which is a strong and resilient material. Essentially, this material is safe to wash using a machine. So all you need to do is toss them in your washing machine and they’ll be clean as new.

However, you should be cautious when it comes to choosing a fabric cleaner or detergent. Some of the cleaning solutions the manufacturer recommends are: BuggyLOVE, liquid dish soap such as Dawn or Method all-purpose cleaner.

After washing, the best way to dry the fabric is to air-dry. Even though the seat is made of polyester, which is resistant to wrinkles, air-drying is recommended to prevent it from losing its shape.

For the rest of the stroller, look for a handheld vacuum and use it to suck up any loose dirt. Run the vacuum several times, and pay attention to the pockets and storage compartments as these tend to harbor dirt more than other areas. Another area you should focus on when vacuuming is the point where the stroller meets with the seat.

When you’re done vacuuming, clean the foam handlebar using soap and water. Just as you did with the fabric pieces, use baby-safe cleaning solutions. Next, hose down the seat and rinse off any soap residue.

If you notice stubborn stains left on the stroller after cleaning, use a soft fabric brush or toothbrush to clean them. Wet these spots thoroughly to make cleaning easy. You can also look for a kid-friendly stain-removing spray, and target these sections directly. The UPPAbaby Cruz is designed to withstand an array of elements, so don’t be scared of scrubbing aggressively.

Another crucial part of cleaning the fabric is inspecting the stroller for mold. When stored in poor conditions, mold can form on your stroller and create a health hazard for your child.

How to Clean the Frame

The frame is one of the most essential components of a baby stroller because it holds everything together. Now, while you may not realize it, a lot of dirt and grime tends to build up on it. Also, if the frame were to get damaged, it would be very pricey to repair or replace. For these reasons, it’s always good to clean your UPPAbaby stroller frame on a regular basis.

The first step in cleaning is to disassemble the frame. Start by removing the seat or bassinet then remove other detachable accessories carefully. These include items like cup holders and food trays.

With the snack trays and cup holders, these should be washed in the same way that you would treat other eating utensils. However, the Cruz model lacks these attachments so you can skip this step.

After disassembling, first inspect the frame thoroughly. All the components should be in good working condition. Test the mobile parts and ensure that they’re moving as they should. Next, check the car seat adapters. While at it, you should also search for sticky spots or stuck levers, which call for extra attention.

If all the parts are functioning as they should, you can start brushing away debris and other particles. Don’t forget to clean tiny gaps that could be harboring dirt.

Next, wipe down the surface of the frame with a mild all-purpose cleaner. Rather than applying the cleaning solution directly on the frame, you can apply on a clean towel then use it to clean the stroller. Using the towel, remember to clean any detached metal and plastic components as well.

When you finish cleaning the brakes, inspect the brakes. A well-functioning braking mechanism should be able to lock both wheels in place. If the brakes are squeaky or sticky, you can spray them with WD-40 to enable them operate more smoothly. Also, remove any dirt and debris that could be stuck in the brakes.

For the wheels and rims, you’re free to wash them using a gentle disinfectant and a small brush to remove sand and dirt. It’s easier to clean caster wheels when they’re detached so be sure to do this first.

With UPPAbaby Cruz and other strollers from this brand, the manufacturer opted to use polyurethane wheels instead of the former AirGo tires. These have replaced the pressurized wheels found in other strollers, and they create a mechanism that prevents punctures and sudden flats just as effectively as pneumatic tires do.

In terms of cleaning and maintenance, this means that you don’t have to start inflating the tires because of low pressure issues. The only thing you’ll need to check is the tread of the rubber. There shouldn’t be any holes or other obstacles that could hinder the wheels from working efficiently.

Finally, reassemble all the pieces. Before you reattach the frame, ensure that it’s completely dry. If it’s even slightly wet, this can cause formation of rust and mold.

When you’re certain that all the parts are dry, start reattaching them. Use screws and other tools as needed. For the metallic and plastic components, all you’ll need to do is snap them into place. Don’t forget to reassemble the cup holders and trays, if present.

Spray the stroller one last time with a disinfectant spray. If you don’t plan to use the stroller for a long time, apply a kid-friendly spray to keep it smelling fresh.

FAQs about UPPAbaby Cruz Stroller

Should I remove the toddler seat before folding the UPPAbaby Cruz stroller?

No, there’s no need to remove the seat. This stroller is designed in such a way that it’s completely safe to fold it with the seat attached. However, the seat should be facing the front and in an upright position.

How does one fold the UPPAbaby Cruz stroller?

Start by activating the braking mechanism so the stroller comes to a complete stop. This is essential to prevent the stroller from moving forward on its own.

Next, press the button positioned on top of the handlebar. This is to extend the stroller’s handle to the maximum height possible. For easy folding, the handle should always be in its highest position. Then, use your index fingers to slide the release triggers in an upward direction. Continue sliding them upward until the frame starts folding.

When the frame starts to fold, hold the handle using right hand and put your left hand onto the back leg. Continue folding the pushchair until the left-sided latch engages. If you go about this correctly, the stroller should stand independently when it’s fully folded.

The board is made of an aluminum frame, which provides enough strength to accommodate a 55-lb toddler, but still light enough that it doesn’t add too much weight to the stroller.

Oftentimes, buyers compare this stroller to similar single strollers like the Nuna Mixx, Bugaboo Bee and Strokke Scoot.

These mimic the same feeling you’d get from real air-filled tires. This improvement served as a replacement for the frame suspension that was removed in the same year.

What sets the Cruz stroller wheels apart?

UPPAbaby has actually employed a high-performance technology that is used in making athletic shoes. This enables them to create all-terrain wheels, which don’t get flats easily. Known as the AirGo patented wheels, these are able to provide the same performance of pneumatic tires. They offer excellent shock absorption, and the fact that they’re large also helps to improve their performance.

What is the size of UPPAbaby Cruz stroller?

In its folded or compact form, the stroller measures 13 x 22.3 x 36 inches. When unfolded, its dimensions are 37 x 22.3 x 40.5 inches.

One of the best inventions from UPPAbaby is the travel bag that’s designed specifically for use with their strollers.

It’s an inexpensive solution that helps to keep your stroller safe and secure; hence, minimizing the risk of damage. The Travel Bag comes with another inner wheel bag for the stroller’s wheels, and a padded pocket for the handlebar. Plus, this bag has wheels for easy navigation. Here are the steps to follow when packing your Cruz in the stroller bag:

  • Start by unrolling and opening the zip of the travel bag. Place it flat on the surface with its flap open.
  • Fold the stroller using the guidelines given earlier. Remove the stroller’s back wheels. Position the wheel posts so that they’re facing each other and then stack them. What type of fabric is used on the Cruz stroller?

For all UPPAbaby Cruz strollers that were made in 2017 till now, the manufacturer has used polyester fabric for the toddler seat. This includes the stroller with loic fabric color. The fabric is complemented by a polyurethane foam padding.

All 2018- later strollers also have the handlebars constructed using full-grain leather. The bassinet is made of polyester and then covered in a lining made from a combination of materials namely cotton, nylon and polyester.
